SKYE - Child Hat & Mittens

This simple hat and mittens set is made in Aran weight yarn.
It is easy and quick to knit, and perfect for the chillier days ahead!

I suggest - if you are a loose knitter - to use a smaller size of needle for the ribs.

 

Skye Hat & Mittens               6 – 12 months

 

Tension:

4sts = 1”  

 

Skye Hat

 

Requirements:

Aran weight yarn

5.5mm needles

 

Size:

Width:  15”

Height:  7”

 

Instructions:

Cast on 61sts


Choose either a single rib or a double rib ~

For a single rib ( 1 x 1)

1st Row:          S1, * k1, p1, repeat from * to last 2sts, k2

2nd Row:         S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end

 

For a double rib ( 2 x 2)

1st Row:           S1, k2, * p2, k2, repeat from *to last 2sts, p1, k1

2nd Row:          S1, k1, p2, * k2, p2, repeat from * to last st, k1

 

Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times more

11th Row:       S1, knit to end

12th Row:       S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2rows until work measures 5½” from the cast on

 

It is easy to adjust the hat height here ~ by increasing or decreasing the number of rows.

If you want a turn up brim – add 2” to the length here.

 

To shape the crown:

Row 1:            S1, k2, * k2tog, k2, repeat from * to last 2sts, k2tog             (46sts)     

Row 2:            S1, purl to last st, k1

Row 3:            S1, knit to end

Row 4:            S1, purl to last st, k1

Row 5:            S1, * k2tog, k1, repeat from * to end                                      (31sts)   

Row 6:            S1, purl to last st, k1                            

Row 7:             K2tog all across row to last st, k1                                           (16sts)

Row 8:            S1, purl to last st, k1

Row 9:            K2tog all across row 

                                                   

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’.

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure.

Sew up side seam and weave in ends.

 

Skye Mittens


Requirements:

Aran weight yarn  (10ply)

5.5mm needles

 

Size:

Length:  5"  (12.5 cm)

Width:    5¼"  (13 cm) all around hand

 

Instructions:            

Make two mittens the same

 

CUFF

Cast on 23sts

1st Row:           S1, * k1, p1, repeat from * to last 2sts, k2

2nd Row:          S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end

Repeat last 2 rows 4 times more

 

HAND

1st Row:           Knit                 

2nd Row:          Purl                                                                            

3rd Row:           K10, inc in next 2sts, k11                                                       (25sts)

4th Row:           and all following even rows – Purl                                             

6th Row:           K10, inc in next st, k2, inc in next st, k11                               (27sts)

7th Row:           K10, inc in next st, k4, inc in next st, k11                               (29sts)

9th Row:           K10, inc in next st, k6, inc in next st, k11                               (31sts)

10th Row:         P20, turn

 

THUMB

K9, turn

Working on these centre 9sts only work a further 4 rows

P2tog, p2tog, p2tog, p3tog

Cut off yarn leaving a tail. Draw a needle through these 4sts. Draw up tightly and fasten off. 


TOP

With wrong side facing, rejoin yarn to last 11sts left on the needle, purl 11

Continue on 22sts, - work 4 rows

 

SHAPE TOP

1st Row:  K1, s1, k1, psso, k5, k2tog, k2, s1, k1, psso, k5, k2tog, k1

2nd Row: Purl

3rd Row:  K1, s1, k1, psso, k3, k2tog, k2, s1, k1, psso, k3, k2tog, k1

4th Row:  Purl

Cast off knitwise

 

Join the thumb seam, top and side seam. Darn away ends.

ALFIE Hat


Alfie - Classic Striped Hat
for a babies, toddlers, children, teenagers and adults.

M = Main colour          C = Contrast colour
4mm needles

For a baby of 0 - 3 months

Size          
Width:    5½ “ (14cm)   11” (28cm) all around 
Height:   5½ “ (14cm)

Pattern:
Using M, cast on 65sts
Work 10 rows in k1,p1 rib or garter stitch (every row knit)
Add in C (do not cut off the first colour, simply carry it loosely up the side and use as required)
Using C, work 4 rows in stocking stitch
Using M, work 4 rows in stocking stitch
Using C, work 4 rows in stocking stitch
Using M, work 4 rows in stocking stitch
Using C, work 4 rows in stocking stitch
Using M, work 2 rows in stocking stitch
Continue in main colour only

Shape the top ~
1st  Row:  (K6, K2tog) repeat to last st, k1               57sts
2nd, 4th,6th,8th,10th  Rows:  Purl
3rd  Row:  (K5, K2tog) repeat to last st, k1               49sts
5th  Row:  (K4, K2tog) repeat to last st, k1               41sts

1-3years            Cast on 81sts, work until 6” from cast on, shape top          7½” total height
4-10years          Cast on 89sts, work until 7” from cast on, shape top          8½” total height
Teens/Woman    Cast on 97sts, work until 8” from cast on, shape top          9½” total height
Adult Man          Cast on 105sts, work until 9” from cast on, shape top       10½”” total height
