Galway Bay - Adult's & Child's Ribbed Hats

Well I have had so many lovely comments about my ribbed ladies hat knitted in DK - and requests for something similar in Aran weight yarn - so cosy for the cold days ahead ........ 

So here you are ~  this is so simple and quick to knit! And the stretchy nature of this hat means that, if you are knitting this as a gift, you don't have to worry too much about size.

Galway Bay Ribbed Hat

Adult Lady’s Hat

Tension:

4sts = 1” over the ribbing pattern, when stretched as worn

Size:

Width:  17” - 18” when stretched as worn

Height:  8”

Note: This hat will stretch to fit a range of sizes

Instructions:

Using 5.5mm (if you are a loose knitter), or 6mm needles (if you are a tight knitter) -

Cast on 69sts

1st Row:        S1, k2, * p2, k2, repeat from *to last 2sts, p1, k1

2nd Row:        S1, k1, p2, * k2, p2, repeat from * to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows until work measures 6 ½ “

It is easy to adjust the hat height here ~ by increasing or decreasing the number of rows.

If you want a turn up brim – add 2” to the length here.

To shape the crown:

Row 1:          S1, k2, * p2tog, k2, repeat from * to last 2sts, p1, k1             
Row 2:          S1, * k1, p2, repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 3:          S1, k2, * p1, k2, repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 4:          S1, * k1, p2, repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 5:          S1, * k2tog, p1, repeat from * to last st, k1                       

Row 6:          S1, * k1, p1, repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 7:          K2tog all across row to last st, k1                                      
Row 8:          P2tog all across row                                                              

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’.

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure.
Sew up side seam and weave in ends.

Add a pom-pom if desired.

Adult Man’s Hat

Tension:
