Perfect Premature and Newborn Unisex Baby Hat

Almost as soon as I posted the instructions for my 'Perfect Unisex Baby Hat' on my blog and on Ravelry, I was inundated with requests for other sizes! Several people suggested that the hat would be perfect for charity knitting.

The pattern is really easy to do - it's only a repeat of two rows and one of them is knit! So it's great for knitters of all abilities.
And it's a great way to use up small amounts of yarn left over from other projects.

So, as requested, here are the instructions for other sizes ~
  • Small Premature Baby             7″ circumference, 3½“ high
  • Medium Premature Baby          9″ circumference, 4½“ high
  • Large Premature Baby             11″ circumference, 5½“ high
  • Newborn Baby                        12″ circumference, 6“ high

  1. That's great Marianna, I'm making crochet preemie hats just now and will be posting the pattern soon, I'm working on the new born size at the minute, these are great as I like to alternate crochet with knit and I was going to try them in smaller sizes you must have read my mind, thank you for the patterns. You could publish your own book of patterns by now you clever thing you. :)

  5. This looks like a wonderful baby hat pattern! I am a lifelong crocheter and a 1-month new knitter and I think I can make this one! I love the look of the ribbing and how it goes from the brim to the crown of the hat! :)
    Thank you very much!

  8. I must be doing something wrong...the rib doesn't work out for me. At thw end of the row is P3, K1, then on next row the first stitches are S1, K1, P3...it makes a messy moss stitch, not a rib :/. I'll work on it because I love the hats :)

  12. please can you come up with these patterns in the round. the hospitals are requesting that they be knit in the round so that they don't have that bulky seam to deal with on the little ones heads.

  13. Hi! I'm probably being silly but the instruction to:

'Repeat the last two rows until work measures 2“, ending after a knit row'

Is confusing me as row 4 has decreases so would lead to decreasing too early. How should I read this bit? Any advice appreciated :)

  14. 4th Row: S1, k1, p3, *k2, p3, repeat from * to last st, k1
Verbose: slip 1, knit 1, purl 3, (knit 2, purl 3) repeat the bracketed instructions until you have 1 stitch left, knit 1
